End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center

Visiting the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is a great way to learn about the history of Oregon! The Interpretive Center is a subterranean museum of historical artifacts and events. The Interpretive Center has hands-on exhibits where costumed interpreters describe the difficulties of packing for a cross-country journey. Free to enter, little ones may dress up, pack a wagon, and attempt pioneer crafts and activities like candle making at the Interpretive Center. The museum explains how Oregon City was the end of the line for many travelers because it was when land claims were granted for Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming in the "Bound for Oregon" video presentation and other exhibits.

The Country Store, which is also on the premises, sells genuine mementos and locally produced items such as beaded items from the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde. A Master Gardener's Pioneer Garden with plants and heirloom roses modeled on those grown in 1860s Oregon is also on view. The specimen roses are cared for by professional gardeners who give talks about plant life in pioneer times, a subject that is still relevant today thanks to expert study.

You may learn more about the region's rich history, including the Oregon Trail and the individuals who traveled it, with several special video programs from the Interpretive Center and learn more about Barlow Road's historical significance, go on a tour of Barlow Farm in 2019 to see how they farm today or experience a day in the life of a Woman of the West.

Take advantage of the relaxing lounge with a complimentary coffee or tea while the kids play pioneer-inspired games. The Visitor Center at the End of the Oregon Trail features exhibits on Oregon Trail history and Clackamas County history, as well as a large selection of local goods and gifts in the Country Store, which now offers healthy lunches and snacks including smoked salmon, cheese, and jerky. Check out the calendar for additional events at the Center, too!

During the one-and-a-half-hour tour, the guide will discuss fascinating facts about the risks, activities, and decisions that pioneers had to face when leaping off settlements in Kansas, the Great Plains, forts, campsites, forks in the road, and their ultimate destination in Oregon.
